3rd Kagawa English Haiku Gathering Held at Ritsurin Garden

On March 28, 2010, we held the 3rd Kagawa English Haiku Gathering at the Kikugetsu-tei Teahouse in Ritsurin Garden.  Four participants from foreign countries and five Kagawa citizens participated.  After learning about the basics of haiku from Fumiko Hara-sensei, the Vice-President of the Kagawa Branch of the Association of Haiku Poets, we then composed English-language haiku poems together while enjoying the beautiful view of the cherry blossoms out in the garden.

Please enjoy the haiku selected by all of the participants as the best poems of the Gathering!

Selected Works from the 3rd Kagawa English Haiku Gathering:

Below Cherry blossoms
Half a pond reflects with ripples
The rest of it calms
Tsukiji

A cherry blossom
Rippling across the lake
And out of my sight
Nick Josten

Wind over waters
Through awakening branches
And through my fingers
Julia Mace

A moment alone
Daphne flowers in bloom and
Fragrance in the air
Kumiko Doi

Breeze tells of spring
By shaking a violet
At the foot of me
Tomoko Ueda

Ojisan lays down,
Warming winter weary bones
On spring bathed wood
Aandrea LaFavor

I’m taking a jog
Orion’s constellation
My guidepost above
Chiho Hamada

Even from afar
They dance for joy in the wind
Itozakura
遠目にも
風に歓喜の
糸さくら
Hara-sensei

Pond’s surface reflects
Layer upon layer of
Cherry blossom white
水面に
映れる花の
白さかな
